In winter, using a ventilation pump makes for the pond surface not completely freezing so that developping fermentation gases may escape. Thus, the water is provided with vital oxygen, and dangerous fermentation gases are expelled.
The functinal principle of pond ventilators is similar. A pump punps air via a hos into a distributor that emits it into the water. There, aeration stones or aeration plates can be used that evenly emit oxygen.
To determine the suitable pond aeration, one has to take into account the pond size, number of inhabitants, and quantity of oxygen generating plants. Furthermore, the type and quantitiy of feeding might be important. Here is a rule of thumb: The average performance of the pump should equal the quarter of the pond capacity.
Aeration pumps are perfectly suitable for use in aquaria. Additional aeration is particularly recommended when you perform medical treatment of the aquarium inhabitants, as a higher oxygen need is to be expected and the flow disperses the medicine in the water.
When the sun shines on the aquarium several hours a day, an aeration pump is recommended, too, lest the water heat up.
